About this clue type
From the preamble to Azed No. 1596
Clues are of two types. In the acrosses, except for 8, the cryptic part leads to the answer to be entered and the definition part leads to a one-word anagram of that answer. In the downs, the definition part leads to the answer to be entered and the (cryptic) remainder leads to a one-word anagram of the answer. The wording in clues assumes that the words not entered in each case proceed in the same direction (across or down) as the anagrams of them that are entered.
Competitors should submit a clue to in the style of the other across clues. The definition given at 8 is for the answer entered there. It has more than one possible one-word anagram and competitors may use whichever of these they wish in their clues.
