About this clue type
In Azed 1606 each grid entry across consists of two words that overlap, the last four letters of the first being the first four (in the same order) of the second. Each across clue consists of a definition of one of the two overlapping words (either of them) and a cryptic indication of the other one. Competitors submit a clue of this type, to replace two definitions. They may make their own choice which to define and which to indicate cryptically.
In Azed 1654 and 2196 the across entries each contain two words overlapping by three letters. The competition clue, in the style of the across clues, consists of clues to the two overlapping words, in either order; one of these is normal, but in the other the cryptic indication refers to the full word minus the overlapping portion. Either word may be clued first, and the two types of clue that make up each double clue may be in either order.
In Azed 2105 and 2456 (‘Collisions’) the across entries contain two words overlapping by one or more letters. The competition clue, in the style of the across clues, consists of a definition of each the two overlapping words, and subsidiary indications of each word, minus the overlapping portion. Either word may be clued first. The definition and subsidiary indication of the first word clued precede those of the second.
