COMMENTS
452 entries, very few mistakes (SOWT for SOWP mostly and a few careless ARISTOTELEANS). I don’t think anyone got REALIA wrong although it’s only in the newest edition of Webster. (For those who’ve never encountered it before it’s most frequently used in the field of English Language Teaching.) I was intrigued by the challenge of trying to fit eight 12-letter words into the diagram, with the consequent reduction of the number of different word lengths to three, and was agreeably surprised at how easy it was to do. It probably made solving a lot easier, though the nasty little CIVE / LEVE cross in the SE corner doubtless added several extra minutes (some said hours!) to completion time. If a word isn’t in its expected place in Chambers, do look round carefully before telling me I’ve played dirty by not saying it isn’t there. I try to be scrupulously accurate about specifying which words (excluding proper names) are not in Chambers and where they are to be found.

A good and varied entry for the pre-Christmas build-up. I had fears that the clue-word would prove troublesome, I don’t know why. Many of you thanked me for offering you such an easy word and surmised that it was offered in preparation for a Christmas stinker. Perish the thought! Dissenterism is a sufficiently vague concept (especially without a capital) to permit considerable freedom of definition. CJM’s clue brilliantly achieved accuracy as well as conciseness. Minor quibble: I’d have preferred ‘mitredness’ in inverted commas since the word is not actually found. Elsewhere ministers (Government or Church) and Mrs T’s Denis were to me the most amusing ideas, if handled with care.

I must close in haste as Seasonal Fare looms, in both senses. I’ve received many cards and good wishes for Christmas and the New Year. My wife and I thank you all and return the compliments of the season. I hope 1981 is a prosperous year for us all.
