COMMENTS.—Another large entry and 447 correct; a difficult type to start but rewarding to persistence. Three mistakes each reached double figures:—“iebec” + “firth,” “shior” and “carite”: Chambers, if available, would have prevented them all. There were a few others of the same sort, no less than 11 slips in copying—e.g. “wellher,” “nahogany,” “dry-eyee”—and 6 people whose spelling was bad enough to let them write “mahogony” even though it wouldn’t fit the clue. A pity that so much diligence should end as it did in these 17 cases!

Some good red herrings were reported:—“purse” from pucker + superb. “Danube” from fluer + Xanadu bergs, “bruit” from Sensation + turbine, “armed” from with rifles + trade mercantile. None were set intentionally.

In choosing winners I had to go chiefly for ingenuity in giving definitions; there were so many clues of more or less equal merit from the headline point of view.

Finally a hint to several competitors last time and one this time:—the Cartoonist is Emett not “Emmet.”
